MyFFXI's The NM: Issue 3: How To Make Sweet Potato Crawlers!! (RL Food)
Hello MyFFXI members!! This time on the NM, Tadasi of the Migardsormr server shows you how to make crawler cakes out of sweet potatoes.
Panel 1: When I went to the kaiten-zushi restaurant, there were so-called Sweet Potato Cakes on the conveyor, but all I could see were little Crawlers.
Panel 2: Not only that, but when 4 of them came in succession…
“Woah! A Crawler link! w” I thought to myself…
(Elmer note: A 回転寿司 kaiten-zushi restaurant is a place when various sushi are placed onto a long conveyor belt that runs throughout the store. Some places just have a single oval with the chefs standing in the middle ready to take personal orders. Bigger ones, like the ever prevalent Kappa Sushi chain, have belts that go up and down multiple aisles, which also wind through the back of the store where high school kids and old people take your order through a computer or intercom.)
Ingredients
You can see the ingredients for a Crawler gathered together above. There’s about enough there to make 2 Notorious Monsters. I am using Coarse Sugar, so it has a yellow color.
Part A - The Crawler’s outside body
* Sweet Potato - 300g
* Coarse Sugar - 30g
* Egg Yolk (1)
* Butter - 45g
* Milk (user’s discretion)
* Vanilla Extract (user’s discretion)
* Egg Yolk (one more for the finishing touch)
Part B - The Crawler’s insides (custard cream)
* Egg Yolk (3)
* Milk - 200ml
* Coarse Sugar - 60g
* Wheat Flour - 20g
* Butter - 10g
* I had no rum, so I used Orange Liquor (user’s discretion)
Part A
↑ Remove the skin from the sweet potato and cut it into thin, circular slices.
↑ Boil the chopped pieces, crush them up once they soften, and pour them into the strainer.
↑ Mix one egg yolk together with all other ingredients but milk. Don’t worry if a little falls through the strainer, just keep going.
↑ Once the mixture is nice and firm, start adding milk. Be sure not to make it too soft, or it will be difficult to shape it.
Part B
↑ Mix together one egg yolk, a tablespoon of milk, half the allotted sugar and the flour. Put the mixture through the strainer.
↑ Gradually mix the remaining sugar and milk together with the previous step in a heatable container. Lightly heat the mixture on a stove top. Be careful, as it can burn easily.
Once the mixture is nice and thick, lower the heat and add in butter and liquor. I like a lot of liquor in mine. w
Putting it Together
↑ Put the filling made in Part B inside the contents from Part A by sort of wrapping it up inside it. It’s actually easier to make big ones, so make a NM-sized crawler (whatever that means). First craft some long, pointy horns.
↑ Using chopsticks, or any small stick-like implement, give the potato a more caterpillar shape. After cooking, the whole thing will fatten up, so don’t worry if you mess up a little.
↑ Now mix the final egg yolk in a little water, and paint it over the crawlers. Since we have no Black Magic, cook everything in an oven at 230 degrees for 20 minutes.
(Elmer Point: 芋 imo means potato, while 芋虫 imomushi means caterpillar. Japanese players often call crawlers ‘imo’ and use the single character 芋 to refer to them. An いもいも imoimo is like a pun then, combining two synonyms.)
