Conflict Resolution
People are either drawn to something and have an approach motivation or they have the desire to avoid it or better said as an avoidance motivation. The closer one is to obtaining something that they have an approach motivation towards the stronger the motivation for approach is. The closer one is to being faced with something they wish to avoid the stronger the urge to avoid it becomes. Most desires that we possess are not simply one or the other but are a combination of the two. Sometimes when faced with a choice people become frustrated when the decision is not simple because the two motivations are perceived as equal or are in fact equal. Frustration can also occur when one only has one desire but that desire is block by some obstacle preventing it from being obtained. These are some of the factors affecting our minds when we make decisions. Usually after making a decision we will continue to justify it in our mind so that we are convinced our choice was correct. This is to prevent us from developing any types of neurosis or decision inhibiting paralysis. Constant frustration of a desire can also lead to the development of a neurosis.
