The World Today
Posted On 02/19/2008 13:10:55 by project9c5

So there is a whole lot going on in the world right now. Kosovo has declared its independance from Serbia. The US, UK, France and Italy are backing them, (is Spain?) Russia is very much against the this, Putin has stated that he will not recognize them as a nation. China also has voiced it concerns over the seperation of Kosovo from Serbia. This has been called an illegal action. One side of the arguement is that Kosovo is under the jurisdiction of Serbia and should not be allowed to seperate, instead the nation should be aided in settling its differences internally while remaining whole. The other side appears to be that the systematic disenfrancisement of the citizens of Kosovo has gone on for too long and this seperation was inevitable.

All of this in the wake of the uproar over the US desire to build a nuclear missle defense system west of Russia to intercept potential missles from Iran. As well as the announcement by the United States that we will be shooting down one of our failed spy sat's launched in 2006 I believe.

Then today Castro has announced he will be resigning. We live in a very interesting time these days where the world is changing extremely quickly.

The amount of change that occurs in my opinion is accelerated by the speed with which people can access inforamtion about ideas and occurances in other parts of the worlds. I can see that the results of the next American and Russian presidential elections will be very crucial and it will be more important than ever to research the candidates using good sources of information (chain letters don't count) then to go out and vote for who you think is best.

I'm curious on peoples opinions of events abroad though. I would like to avoid a discussion of United States domestic politics if possible. What else is on the horizon? Are we approaching another Cold War arms race? Will we be able to avoid one?

Ok this, this is just insane... why is something so serious being investigated only by the RMP? o_O;

Sometimes just making sure everyone knows that they may not necessarily lose their fight but that they definitely won't come away without any battle wounds is enough. Mutually assured destruction has worked to keep us all in check for a long time. Though I think we may need something new, the mentalities of a lot of the eastern cultures is very different than that of the west. Yeah I just went to east west divide, go go cold war terms.

Whats funny about that story is that we are saying that we are 'confident' it hit both the satellite and fuel tank and then further in the story it says we've seen nothing bigger than football sized objects. lol.  so, um, yea, we DEFINITELY hit something.  I'm sure we had some way of watching it via telescope or something!  In any case, yes they do know we have stuff out there and they do know when its coming over and taking pictures ... but I think we gave away WAY too much information with this little 'demonstration' unfortunately.   Then again, maybe it was on purpose ... we wanted to show the world that we are superior and our defenses are top notch.  :)

I'll start with my views on this. I'm gonna go ahead and toss out the excluded middle for on this one because I'm sure the truth lies somewhere in between. Though it really comes down to the fact that if they are blowing up secrets to keep them secret, I'm all for that, I don't want us to help any nation catch up to us technologically. Though the engineer in me does know that 1,000lbs of solid frozen anything contained within a solid fire resistant tank would probably survive re-entry and make it to the ground. Once there it'd diffuse out. But during this diffusion for a most likely very long period the area around it will be extremely dangerous and if it were to land in a crowded metropolitin area it'd be very very bad. Diffusing something in the upper atmosphere is a lot safer because before any of it reaches the zone that we actually breathe it will have diffused to a concentration below any danger limits.

Everyone has known we have spy sat's for years. That isn't a huge secret. It'd be harder to sneak something into space the size of a schoolbus without anyone noticing so we just let them know its there. This is part of the reason why the USSR transported everything that was top secret accross their nation in giant iron covered trains and their secret facilities had coverings similar to those used in top secret installations in the US. Its an old game of cat and mouse the two countries have been playing since WWII. We just can't seem to decide who is the cat and who is the mouse.

At least arms race tends to be good for the economy and the employment rate of those with engineering and science backgrounds.

oh and seriously, why didn't we build a freakin' 'self destruct' on that stupid satellite?  HOW DUMB ARE WE???  Here's the code real quick ... *internal programming to self destruct device = we haven't heard from SPACECOM in 30 days, self destruct now.* BOOM!  It's really THAT easy. People are too smart for their own good sometimes.  And another thing ... the whole report "we are shooting it down from an undisclosed location but dont be anywhere neat Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean at 9:30PM EST ... oh and we'll be sending out a HUGE ship and 2 destroyers but DON'T TRACK THEM! or we'll be upset" ... omfg ... seriously?  Can we be a little more discrete?  I guess not. /end rant
