The World's View of Obama's Win
Posted On November 05, 2008 08:37 AM by Cow-yooo

Cool little story TIME did on Obama's win, obviously, from the perspective of the rest of the world. Was really interesting to read and pretty uplifting considering so far all these things just make me feel better and better about the state of the nation. Plus Obama's girls get a puppy!

On a more serious note I'm hearing from a few different people a ton of negativity about this election. Things doubting the intelligence of black people, identifying them as "WHICH ONE IS THE BLACK GUY?" zombies, and even going so far as to note him as the anti-christ, calling on their christian pals to start committing to those bedtime prayers because it's all coming to an end soon. All I can say to this is come the fuck on. lol America made history last night and all some people can do is shit on the situation for everyone else. Can't we maturely say McCain lost and America has made it's decision? We made our decision about Bush in 2000 and 2004 and lived with it, and whether people like it or not we're all in this together so bitching about how we've made this giant mistake is just producing negativity.

Also apparently the wealth of ffxi kids can't be bothered to hear about this and keep proclaiming "keep politics out of ffxi!". If nothing else this makes me want to die, but at least I can take solace in the fact that most ffxi kids are dorky and out-of-touch so no big thang!

P.S. Semagic keeps trying to replace Obama with "Alabama". This gives me the giggles. ;3

I'm going to dare to be happy and inspired. I am still worried about the country, and the people's reasons for doing this, but I also feel really good about the love... I guess there isn't a wrong time for love.

Last time I checked, the world doesn't get to vote in our elections for a reason. I could really care less about popular opinion of the nation abroad. I wonder if people have any actual political reasons for the way they voted? I don't think it's responsible to give the nation over to someone just so the nation can have a big gigantic group hug and feel good moment. I want to celebrate his victory but it feels so hollow and out of touch to me. It's smack dab in the middle of no crisis in which having a black man finally ascend to the White House meets any concern of the nation. Not economics, not the war on terror, not the distressing rise of mental illness, not the aggressive mobilizaiton of Russia, not the need for more prisons because such a large % of the populace is turning to crime. None of these things have anything to do with why he was elected. Why such a momentous occassion in a time when it serves no direct purpose but to stroke our egos? It's irresponsible. It's just a sign of how out of touch and dreamy Americans have become. I can only pray that the new president is substantial and capable of dealing with the things that actually matter to me.

The whole point of the celebration is not that "black dood made it", but that someone with superior plans and ideals was able to make it in america -despite- being black when that would've easily barred him from success in previous years. People are excited that this guy who has a real thought-out plan is here. He's made waves in so many different areas of what constitute concern for americans but no one expected him to be able to finish after getting slammed by lying attack ads and phone calls. In every way this is impressive for us.

Why do you really think he was elected? It would be ignorant to say that he was or wasn't voted for because he's black, but racism isn't so prevalent to make that a defining reason for his election. The two primary concerns for the mjaority currently are the economy and the wars we're involved in, and for most americans that are being affected by both race just isn't an issue. For many singular issues such as race, abortion, gay rights, the 2nd amendment and the experience levels of Obama and Palin were causes to vote one way or another, but these were not the issues that shaped this election.

After voting for Bush not once but twice and seeing our attitude towards the U.N. council and invading the middle east our international appearance is trash. Maybe Kerry didn't provide enough grounds for removing a president in the midst of a war, but Gore losing to Bush was truely a mistake to me. The purpose of linking this article was to show that a few other influential people around the world agree with the decision and think the US is on the way back to being seen as a great place again.

I think we got it right this time and some parts of the world agree with us so I do think it's a time to celebrate. He's not even in office for another few months and this only happened one day ago so I really don't see the problem with wearing a smile on our faces for a little while. Sure these problems will all fall on him then and we've yet to see how he'll deal with everything, but we voted him in because we're confident things will turn out well.
