4th of July Fan Explosion
Posted On 07/04/2008 10:44:06 by hakuwind

So after studying, taking tests, attending and hosting events, I am finally able to get on FFXI. (It's been what...3? 4 months since my last REAL play?) I am on my computer (downloading a few needed updates) and I hear a weird noise coming from my computer.  I ignore it for awhile but it sounds like something is hissing or....leaking.  I keep ignoring it until the noise stops. At first I was relieved until my whole computer shut off in front of me.

I began to think, "This isn't anything new to me. It used to do this all the time in the past...but then again it stopped for a long time as well..."  I took the panel off the side of my desktop and check for a ton of dust.  Well there was some dust but nothing too extreme. Getting most of the dust out was first priority.  After that I pressed the power button and waited to see what would happen. System boots up normally.  Login, wait for boot-up, close unneccessary applications.  The screen goes black and my computer is off yet again.  Estimated time: 10 minutes.  Seems a bit strange to say the least... Ok maybe it's this one time?  Press the button again, go through needed procedures, etc. Estimated time: 10 minutes.  Computer turns off again.  Hmm..this time it seems like my computer is repeating this step of irritation to my mental well-being.

After which I've been on my laptop ever since.  I remember why I didn't use it much to begin with... the graphic card is horrible and I can only play games at almost the lowest graphic setting and still obtain a lot of 'lag' due to low processing speed.  It's been a week since my computer incident (of course taking into account that I'm writing this blog a few weeks after all of this happened) and I test try the computer once again. Maybe it needed some along time. Who really knows first take.  Estimated time after booting up: 10 minutes. I suppose you can already guess what happened. But for the sake of my sanity and OCD of having to remind just in case, I'll say right out.  My computer turns off, once again.  After discussing the matter with a few people and running a few more irritating checks, I have come to the conclusion that my fan has exploded (hence why it doesn't spin when my computer is on).

Time to get another fan...

...or a new computer.  With my lack of funds...it seems the fan is closer to my reach.

Which fan? Sounds like its the power supply overheating which isn't that serious. Take your power supply out (its the big thing with the fan and all the wires coming out of it) just be careful unplugging stuff. Take it to one of them mom and pop computer stores and get a new one for 30-40 bucks. Make sure you can bring it back if that's not the problem. And make sure its the same type (some power supplies have 'innie' plugs for the power cord, some have 'outie' ones. I've seen both :3)

This happened to us on the old old computer I had. The fan on the power supply stopped working. It usually made a LOT of noise, so when it stopped making noise I thought GOOD! Only, not so good when it overheated and shut down. We were lucky it didn't take the motherboard and stuff with it though. Which can happen.

Thus, make sure you keep your receipt on the power supply. If it overheated to the point of frying your motherboard, you're gonna need the refund to help save up for a new compy ^^;

Wow if your fan broke, then its just going to overheat every ten minutes no doubt lol. You should probably get a new computer altogther. if you get a new fan, you might as well get a new graphic card, which means a new processer which means a motherboard that supports it and it will go on until you basically purchase a new computer haha. Then again you can just get a fan and rock that old school graphic card until it gives out lol
